Good morning, SHPS Families:


At this point, many of you are aware that late last night, Governor Whitmer announced a state-wide school closure beginning Monday, March 16th until Monday, April 6th. While this is an unprecedented event presented by the COVID-19 virus, it is a situation we are prepared for with a plan in place in the interest of your child’s physical and educational well-being. 


At the end of the school day today, your child will be provided with an appropriate device according to their grade-level to take home. It is our intention to engage your child in fun, educational activities during their time away from school. Further instruction regarding these encouraged activities will come from your child’s teacher or principal through the same online platform that your class normally uses to communicate, whether that be Dojo, Facebook, Google Classroom, etc. . 


Please note that we truly believe these activities are important for your child’s well-being and to remove barriers to participation, we will not be asking for payment in exchange for insurance on your device. If you have complications in accessing your child’s lessons, have technological difficulties, or are in need of a repair, please contact our Technology Department for assistance at technology@100ffc.com or by phone at (269) 637-0529. A plan will be put in place for families to pick up or to deliver devices to students that are not in attendance today. Additionally, a paper packet of activities will be provided to students that struggle with internet access. 


Essential operations at central office will remain functional, including communication via SchoolMessenger, the district’s Facebook page, and the district website. We ask that you continue to check your emails and our website daily for new information. 


Governor Whitmer mentioned Spring Break in her statement last night. At this time, we are looking for further guidance from the State, the Board of Education, and the Michigan Department of Education as to how this will impact our current schedule. More information will be provided to our school families when it becomes available.


We are also exploring the possibility of grab-and-go lunches for students in need during the long-term closure, however, this also requires further guidance and consideration from the State.


Although the COVID-19 virus has created a unique experience educationally, I am confident in our school communities’ ability to work together to keep our kids engaged in learning and physically healthy. Resources for you and your family during this closure that covers topics such as “how to talk to your child about the coronavirus,” will become available on the district website in the coming days. I encourage you to take a look at these materials and consider how they can benefit your family. Please continue with the best practices issued by our public health professionals which includes proper handwashing, disinfecting, avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth, etc. 


As always, if you have any questions or concerns, I encourage you to contact my office. This is new for everyone and a time where exercising patience, understanding, and collaboration is of utmost importance. Our staff’s top priority has always and will always be your child’s emotional, educational, and physical well-being.
